Behn in Blue

A site has been identified in Harbledown for a blue plaque commemorating the birthplace of Aphra Behn. Behn was baptised on 14th December 1640 at St Michael’s, Harbledown. The church was almost completely rebuilt in the 1880s, so it isn’t as the Johnsons (Aphra’s family) would have known it. So although we know where Behn was baptised, we don’t know exactly where she was born – although somewhere in the village almost certainly. The blue plaque will commemorate her beginnings in the village. The ivy will be cleared away, yes!
