CCS marked Canterbury’s Pride Saturday with a fun-filled reading of Aphra Behn’s riotously amusing but little known play The Younger Brother or The Amorous Jilt. Unperformed since the 1690s, the sparkling drama shows Aphra at her very best as an exceptionally accomplished writer for the stage. The text provided by Professor Elaine Hobby and trimmed by Stewart Ross left our readers gasping in delight at having uncovered such a little-known treasure. Saucy, witty and remarkably modern in its tone and attitudes, Aphra’s drama left all who were there convinced that it merits a place in the repertoire alongside She Stoops to Conquer, The Country Wife, The Recruiting Officer, and other celebrated dramas of that ilk.
