On the afternoon of Saturday 4 June, Aphra Behn’s best known play, The Rover, was given a vigorous and thoroughly enjoyable reading in St Peter’s Anglican Church by a band of exceptionally talented members and friends of CCS. The occasion was made still more informative by the presence of no. 1 Behn expert Professor Elaine Hobby, who not only read but also fed the company with fascinating snippets of information about the playwright and her text. Such was the fervour of the performances that some readers, led by the Professor and the booming Rev Brian McHenry, leapt to their feet with uncontrolled enthusiasm for the roles they were playing. How misguided were those narrow-minded Victorians when they cancelled the wonderfully amusing work of Canterbury’s most significant daughter!
