We have two shortlisted maquettes from students at EKC for the Michael Steed Toleration Memorial. It will stand in the grounds of the renovated castle.
Both are wonderful. Assuming we can afford only one, which do you prefer? See the accompanying descriptions.
Sam Chatfield – ‘Tolerance’
Shortlisted maquette for the Michael Steed ‘Toleration Memorial’ for the grounds of Canterbury Castle. Project funded by Canterbury Commemoration Society.
Artist statement: “My proposed sculpture uses the bird / dove motif to represent freedom, peace and hope for a more tolerant future. The work would be presented on a head hight, slender plinth to encourage the audience to visually interact and relate to it at approximate eye level.”
Hannah Bellinger – ‘Wave’
Shortlisted maquette for the Michael Steed ‘Toleration Memorial’ for the grounds of Canterbury Castle. Project funded by Canterbury Commemoration Society.
Artist statement: “My proposed sculpture would follow the idea of a design of two waves that are almost parallel and mimic each others wave pattern but never touch, symbolising a respect for boundaries which I believe to represent tolerance. My design provides a seating area for the audience / pubic so that they have a physical experience with the piece. Each wave could be a different colour or texture to represent how different people should tolerate each other.
