The Aphra Behn Society (Europe) is holding their 8th International Conference this year at the University of Kent in the first week of July and we at the Canterbury Commemoration Society are proud to support this celebration of our city’s greatest daughter.
Members of the community are invited to 4 different public lectures on Aphra Behn, taking place as part of the conference.
On Tuesday 2nd July (10.30am), Christine Charlesworth who has sculpted our own remarkable Aphra Behn statue will be talking on her making of the piece. On Wednesday 3rd July (11am), Dr. Mel Evans will be taking about Aphra Behn’s spying letters and on Thursday 4th July, there are two lectures; the first, at 12.30, is our very own vice chair, Charlotte Cornell, taking about Aphra Behn’s childhood in Canterbury and then, at 15.30, Loveday Ingram, who directed Behn’s The Rover for the Royal Shakespeare Company, is talking about Behn onstage now and in the future.
Tickets are only 5 pounds per lecture and can be booked here. Click ‘Book Now’ and then choose ‘public lecture’ from the drop down menu on attendee type.
Finally, as part of the conference, a trip to Westminster Abbey, to lay flowers on Behn’s grave has been arranged. The trip, which includes train travel, entry to the abbey with a guided tour and also access to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries, alongside a short dedication of a flower-wreath at Behn’s grave, is on Friday 5th July and leaves Canterbury East train station at 9.45am. To join this outing (the trip is £50 in total) please click hereand choose Westminster Abbey Trip from the drop down options on attendee type.
