An Inclusive Martyrs Memorial
Using funds generously donated by our former President, Michael Steed, we are working with the City Council on a memorial to all those who died for their faith in or near Canterbury over the centuries.
The existing Martyrs’ Memorial in Wincheap, erected in 1899, commemorates 41 Protestants killed during the reign of Queen Mary I (1553-1558). The new memorial, to stand in the castle grounds, will honour Roman Catholic martyrs, the many Jews who were slaughtered in the castle in medieval times, and all others persecuted for their race and religion.
