Criteria for blue plaques in Canterbury

To be considered for a blue plaque, a person or building must demonstrate notable historical or cultural value, with individuals typically needing to be deceased for at least 20 years and having figured significantly in the history of the area. Buildings need to have an ascertainable historical association with the person or event, and ideally be visible from a public highway.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the criteria:

Individuals:

  • Time since Death: The individual must have died at least 20 years prior to the plaque proposal.
  • Notable Achievements: The individual must have made a significant contribution to human welfare, their field, community or to society at large, or have figured significantly in the history of the area. Notable rogues with a strong story may be considered.
  • Strong Connection to the Location: There should be an ascertainable link between the individual and the building or location where the plaque would be placed.
  • Diversity of Nominations: We encourage nominations of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.

Buildings:

  • Historical Significance and date: The building must have a historical or cultural significance that is worthy of public notice, either through a historical event or a significant cultural connection that is not obvious from the building’s current appearance. Events should have taken place at least 50 years prior to the plaque proposal.
  • Visible from a Public Highway: The building must be visible from a public highway.
  • Strong Association: There should be an ascertainable link between the building and the person or event being commemorated.
  • One or Two Plaques per Building: Generally, no more than two plaques are allowed on one building.

Additional Notes:

  • The criteria for buildings also apply to the nomination of sites where buildings have been demolished.
  • Funding for blue plaques is often limited, but additional plaques may be installed if funding is raised by the applicant.
  • The process for nominating a blue plaque can take several years, including the time to manufacture the plaques themselves.
