Blue Plaques in Canterbury
In 2022-24 the Canterbury Commemoration Society helped the Canterbury Society with its project to add to the number of blue plaques commemorating famous people and events in the city. Huw Merriman MP, the Railways Minister, unveiled the first plaque in a small ceremony at Canterbury West Station on 13 February 2024.
Other plaques commemorated: Sarah Baker, 1737-1816; Aphra Behn, 1640-1689; Weighbridge Cottage, 1830; Ian Dury, 1942-2000; Elizabeth Elstob, 1683- 1756; John Green Hall, 1835-1887; John Lyly, 1553- 1606; Michael Powell, 1905-1990; Audrey Williams, 1902-1978; Catherine, 1896-1977, Stephen Williamson, 1898-1986; and R.W. Humphrey, 1898-1956.
